Horse's trust
We have a breed of horses in Portugal that we are very proud of. They are a national treasure, breaded under government supervision in the "Coudelaria Nacional de Alter Real". The first time i heard, really heard, about them was in a lunch with a swedish. He used to have horses in Sweden and he was telling a story. He was telling why he came every year to Portugal to "Feira da Golega". The first time he went there he saw a small girl mounted on a stallion, in the middle of the fair like it was nothing. He said he was so impressed that he feel in love for Lusitanos just that moment. He just wouldn't allow his daughter to mount a horse in those conditions, but there she was, in a stallion. Those horses are used for the portuguese style bullfighting. They are just magnificent. They stand on the rear legs, use the body to swing from side to side, tricking the bull, and then run forward, turn and calmly, with 800kg of bull's rage just inches away, go around the arena. There are more breed in the world, some are certainly better in many things, but none is more balanced than ours.
I was thing of horse today because of a movie i like. It's called "The horse whisperer", with and directed by Robert Redford. I can't say is my favorite movie, but i do like it a lot. It tells the story of a horse, a family and a trainer.
The movie has three key events, two in the beginning and one in the middle. The first two are for setting up the one in the middle. The remaining of the film, after the third event, it's just closure. The first event is the accident. In one snowy morning, virgin snow, before sun rise, two girls go in a walk with their horses. Suddenly a truck comes, the horse can't climb out of the road, turns against the truck to protect the girl and they crash. The horse get injured very badly and the girl get's amputated, both legs.
The second event is with the girl and the horse. After the girl comes home, she goes to see the horse. He was cornered in the stables with a still open wound in the front leg. She looks at him full of hate. he smells that hate and turns against her, almost killing her. Then they decide to kill the horse. The mother opposes that decision and finds horse whisperer.
The third event take place after several days of work with the horse. One day he just gets frustrated, looses patience and runs away. The trainer goes after him at a distance, calmly and silently, followed by the girl and the mother. Then the horse stops in the middle of a field. He signals both women to stop and he goes slowly to the horse. Then, the horse shows signs of stress. He stops and sits down. And waits. Waits for a day until the horse decides to come to him.
For me that movie can teach a lesson. You can't impose trust. Trust can only be freely given. And one must wait to wort it.
